WDS noVNC Setup

Browser-based remote access for legacy Windows applications

About WDS noVNC Setup

WDS noVNC Setup configures a Windows workstation for secure browser-based remote access. It allows authorized ChromeOS, Chromebook, Windows, and other browser-equipped workstations to access applications that must remain installed on a Windows computer.

The utility was designed to support environments moving toward ChromeOS and Google Workspace while retaining access to Windows-only applications and specialized hardware.

What It Installs & Configures

UltraVNC Server Provides remote access to the Windows desktop and Windows-only applications.
noVNC Provides the browser-based remote desktop interface. No remote-access application is required on the client.
websockify Bridges browser WebSocket connections to the local UltraVNC server.
Automatic Startup Configures the WDS noVNC Web Gateway to start automatically with Windows.
Windows Firewall Configures the required TCP port for browser access.
Diagnostics Checks Python, websockify, noVNC, UltraVNC, firewall configuration, and Web Gateway status.

How It Works

ChromeOS / Browser │ │ HTTP / WebSocket :6080 ▼ WDS noVNC Web Gateway │ │ localhost ▼ UltraVNC Server :5900 │ ▼ Windows Desktop │ ▼ Legacy Windows Application

The Windows application continues to run on its original Windows host. Users interact with that computer through a standard web browser, allowing ChromeOS workstations to access applications that cannot run natively on ChromeOS.

Installation

  1. Download WDS-noVNC-Setup.exe.
  2. Run the installer on the Windows host computer.
  3. Approve the Windows administrator/UAC prompt.
  4. Launch WDS noVNC Setup.
  5. Select Install / Repair.
  6. Configure the UltraVNC remote-access password.
  7. Use Check Status to verify all components.
  8. Open the displayed remote-access URL from an authorized workstation.
Important: WDS noVNC Setup requires administrator privileges because it installs system components, configures a Windows service, creates an automatic startup task, and modifies Windows Firewall settings.

Client Requirements

No software installation is required on the client workstation. Users only need a modern web browser and network access to the configured Windows host.

This makes WDS noVNC particularly useful for shared ChromeOS workstations and Google Workspace environments where employees move between workstations while maintaining their normal cloud-based work environment.
